Research
Dr. Teja Kapoor’s interest in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) began early in her career while caring for complex Lupus patients during her training at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). Her primary research interests in SLE include the establishment of the Columbia Lupus cohort and the use of large clinical databases to identify SLE patients treated at CUMC to evaluate their risk of infections, which have led to a publication evaluating the low prevalence of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. She has also presented multiple abstracts at national conferences on the risk of infections in SLE. Her overall aim in research is to find the best balance between immunosuppression while minimizing the infectious risk and complications. Her research interests also include serological biomarkers in SLE and Undifferentiated Connective Tissue Disease, and the LFA-REAL disease activity scoring instrument that allows for simple and efficient measurement of Lupus activity for use in clinical trials and clinical practices, which have led to abstract presentations at national conferences.
She has an interdisciplinary approach to managing her large cohort of patients with Sjogren’s Syndrome, working with Ophthalmology, Dental, ENT, Pulmonary, OB-GYN, and other specialists.
